When my mum was pregnant with me, she embroidered an alphabet. A for apple, C for car… a little design for each letter. One of those ‘sew by number’ kits, I think.
It’s been on my wall (or someone’s wall) for decades, and I absolutely adore it. I remember studying it as a kid. The colours, the threads, and picking my favourite images (the ladybugs and owl, obviously).
Now that I have kids, there is something about these little alphabets that I just love. The nostalgia, the simplicity, and the very specific visual world of things made for children.
I decided to use this embroidery from the 80’s as inspiration for my next art series. An homage to my mum. Passing something down to my kiddos. And that very specific pleasure of learning your ABC’s. Pssst… can you spot the hidden *meagan*?
